Bunk bed - FreeCAD Production use + Assembly instructions

Post by babaroga »

This bunk bed is one of dozen beds from our production, completely developed with FreeCAD. Photo of the bed represents old version with different ladders.
By completely, I mean 3D modelling, production drawings and Assembly instructions.
For 3D modelling everything is done in Part Design and assembled in sub assemblies and assemblies with A2P.

All 3D views in Assembly instructions were generated with TechDraw WB, post processed with Inkscape and put together with LibreOffice Draw.

Unfortunately, I cannot share model, but there is some screenshots.

You got me. I worked for IK## supplier for 12 years. In my opinion they have visually best assembly instructions.
There is 7-8 products in their catalog developed by myself. Some of them have some components also developed with FreeCAD :-)

Also I stole some ideas from one French producer...
But, generally, workflow for AI works excellent with FC. In my former company my department made dozens of Assembly instructions this way.

Cool stuff 8-) Good work.

Can you give more detail about your modeling workflow and the tree structure? Are all the single parts like the bedposts or the slatted frame separate files combined into a master file, or just separate PartDesign body's in a single file?

My workflow? It depends on complexity of the model. If I need some component/subasembly to be parametric in case it is to be reused for eg.different widths of bed, it is multi-body model with all components in one file. It is not bed, but you can take a look at my model of doors in https://forum.freecadweb.org/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=59370 . I had three different sizes of doors, so by changing dimensions in sketch in first dummy body, all parts adjusts automatically.

This bunk bed is simple so I started with single parts (Part Design workbench used), all in separated files. In every file I create Technical drawing of this single element. You know, if you need mirrored elements, just create original (eg. Right leg), create blank new file and save it as Left leg. Create link to first created files body and in properties set Scale to -1. You will get mirrored copy of original which will automaticali changed if you change original.
You can use same technique in multibody files but you will probably need 180° rotation about x or y axis.

Then I create sub assemblies with A2P Workbench. I already have quite nice collection of different furniture fittings so I add them also in assembly . In this way I created frames and bed sides. Note that one of the legs is just mirrored copy of another one.
In this subassembly, one of legs is mirrored copy of other leg

Second phase was creation of another subassembly, a top and bottom bed again with A2P. Here I used previously created assemblies of front and back frame and bed sides. Two upper rails are files with single body.

After that, I completed assembly of bunk bed. So, there is top bed, bottom bed, distancers, ladders, fittings, etc.

Maybe, you will be also interested in how I made matress base. First I created single rail in Part design. Then I created a new blank file and make a link to rail and make array with Array tool from Draft workbench.

I apologize for using our local names in tree but translating it to english will be overkill for me.

Unfortunately, I cannot. I was supposed to use Solidworks but usually I draw it in FC and export it as STEP. No one ever complained ;) . But anyway I am not suppose to discuss it.

I found some models of fittings for IK## products that went in mass production. I mean, millions of pieces. I made them in 2017. There is also some furniture but I cannot share anything without their permission.

When I finish new batch of Assembly instructions I will put note on the back that OSS was used for creation of documents. I mean, FreeCAD, Inkscape and LibreOffice.
