How about a game of chess ?

Postby r-frank » Sun Nov 16, 2014 8:47 pm

Hello.

I have modelled for my personal joy this chess board with pieces:

Chess with standard parts ...

The pieces are modelled in PartDesign, then I made simple copies of them and placed them in an "Assembly".
You can move the pieces with placement or use the "move-"command in the draft-workbench.
Take notice of the sketch i placed on the chessboard for use of the snap-mode

Plans I found here at craftmanspace.
I just had to do some investigation on the exact DIN/ISO-numbers of the parts used and their dimensions.

After having modelled this I made myself a suitable opponent.
I like to call him "Thread Boltman"
But he tends to screw things up an then he goes nuts ...

He was completely modelled in PartDesign with the exception of the FreeCAD-Text.
This I did in inkscape and then imported it via svg.
He and the chessboard will be starring in my video tutorial #12 on youtube if I ever find time to finish the video.

Unluckily the file size is too big for forum upload.
I think i will upload the model on GrabCAD when the video is finished.

The rest of the single parts.

The assembly is too big for upload.
See it on GrabCAD after video is finished.

Very funny (dabbing coffee from nose)

Looks great and maybe a screenshot should be added to the Wiki Screenshots page.

Your chess board project is very nice! And you're making a tutorial video? Incredible! Please, post a link to your video here when you get it finished. I would love to add it to my Learning FreeCAD playlist.

Hello sam.

Glad that you like my models.
I have already posted on Youtube 11 Videos with (my) german voice.
See my signature.

On my channel I have now 600 subscribers.
Since the Videos are in HD and I speak slow and try do do everything via menus I also have
some non-native-german-Speakers as audience.

Yesterday I also found time to upload my model "Hollstein" Stirling Motor on GrabCAD (see my signature).
I have more Ideas for models and plans, let's see where this leads ...

Thank you. I watched a few of your videos just now and I agree with you. Even though your videos are in German (and mein deutsch ist nict zer gut), I think they will work very well as projects for practicing what we learn in the English tutorial videos that explain the tools, constraints and so on. Speaking of which, I have yet to come across any excellent tutorials in English on the Draft workbench. I have a tutorial on the Draft workbench in my playlist that someone made years ago, but it's just too brief. I prefer something along the lines of how "bram di vries" explained the parts workbench.

Yea, this is pretty fun. Plus, it's so useful!

An idea I have been giving a lot of thought is that once I've finished my 3D printer project, and have gotten pretty good at using it, is to create a YouTube channel teaching mechanical engineering (curriculum taken from this playlist I compiled) using tools like FreeCAD and Blender, teaching my audience how to use these tools as we go along from theory to project. I've also been compiling a playlist curriculum for electricity and electronics and have been learning KiCad and Qucs for the same reason.
