Hi All,
I am having issues with FreeCAD running extremely slow when importing step files.
I have attached one of the files that gives me the most grief. The bearing takes 5 - 10 minutes to import.
Doesnt get much better if I save it as a freecad file, and try to use it in a design, or open it on its own.
What can I do to speed it up?

Retry with 0.19, your file loads here in less than a second (1,4 GHz Intel Core i5).

Just downloaded .19 and gave it a shot. Still the same problem. Maybe my computer just sucks.

If you change the Tessellation settings to too small a value it will slow down the loading of models and display refresh times. I was messing around with these numbers to smooth out the display of curves on small objects and got FreeCAD to slow to a crawl!
I'm using 5.000% and 2.00 degrees which gives a quick loading and refresh for most of my purposes.

That helped tremendously, thank you. I had it at .5%. Still runs slow once loaded, so I will play with the setting and see if I can get it to run faster.

THANK YOU MIKE! That helped a lot!mike_262 wrote: ↑Sun May 17, 2020 6:30 pm Check your Preferences:

Still it looks that the same release of FreeCAD 0.19 on Windows imports STEP 84373189403289x times faster than on FreeBSD with default settings of very high quality
Any other hints on how to make it work smoothly on Open Source OS?

Re: Step Files Very Slow
I would do a test with an ubuntu live cd system and appimage 20.0. then it would have to be loaded with your hardware under 1 second. that would be an indication of a damaged windows
