Ok, of course it must be the body selection, otherwise one would be operating on a feature, which as found out wouldn't work.

Are they other objects -except bodies-which can be used for alignment selection ?

Yes, other solids, so part objects and probably Arch/Bim.
The wiki just states objects, I didn't try with sketches/wires etc.

There are two reasons (at least) why that doesn't work: The Pad has no Placement and no AttachmentOffset and thus cannot be aligned, and it would lead to a link going out of scope.

Try Std_SelBoundingBox with an added LCS at each body and select the Bodies. This will show you where they really are

What has that to do with the alignment tool?

Not much. But it helps to know where and why Bodies are located as they are.
