This can be a huge time-saver, and the workflow is intuitive. It will probably take me some time to relearn this, as the sketch first approach has been etched in my brain.

Simply select a face and choose Pad or Pocket tool. :D

this with the attachment: Pad and pocket directly from face.fcstd

So I downloaded this to see if I could learn some release .17. But I do not get it!

I thought both pad and pocket required a sketch but there seem to be no sketches in
sight.

So could someone tell me what I am missing?

That is where you are wrong. You can pad a flat face directly. Try the following:
- Create a body
- create a primitive cube
- select one side of the cube
- click on "Pad"

Result the selected side gets padded right away.

What you are missing is that the capability is limited. The "sketch" is the outline shape of the face that is selected. If that is what you want, great. If not, you need to add a sketch.

The direct pad and pocket probably do not do anything useful on a simple cube, but they may be useful on more complex shapes such as the polygonal prism in the example quoted.

Very useful. I think I get it now, the edges of the face act as the sketch, yes?

Thanks

I can't tell if this thread is about the Part Design workbench that is currently available in the latest release of 0.17 (Version: 0.17.13528) or if it is about some version (that will still be called 0.17) that is still in development.

If these features are now out of development and in the release version, could you please lock this thread and edit the original post to reflect that A) The discussed features are now in the production version and B) Some of the features discussed here my not match the production version exactly because the posts were written while 0.17 was still in development.

Thank you.

Unlike some forums, locking a thread is pretty uncommon around here. What purpose would it serve?

The discussion here is a running history of concerns and recommendations as version 0.17 was being developed. If you want the current recommendations for the release version of 0.17 the best place to look is the wiki. A lot of work went into updating the many pages in the wiki when 0.17 was released.

Essentially all of the surviving ideas in this topic have been captured in the wiki. The obsolete or incorrect ideas were discarded.

Pre-digested for the user.

Actually, maybe it is time to unpin this topic and let it slide into semi-oblivion. It is linked from the PartDesign Workbench page anyway (in the Links section).

Thankfully, the term "Part Design Next" is no longer in use. After all, v0.17 just re-introduced PartDesign as it was always intended.

+1

I was going to suggest unpinning, when I realized I would be guilty of the same "control mentality" I was complaining about.
