How to model white water kayak?

Postby PrzemoF » Sat Aug 19, 2017 7:32 pm

I'm looking for ideas how to model that boat. I'm going to prepare a few sections and use sweep, but maybe there are other ways to do it?
I need the model to design custom graphics, so no need to model the cockpit, seat, handles etc.
Length: 264 cm
Width: 65 cm
Cockpit length: 86 cm
Cockpit width: 51 cm

Hi, some time ago there was somebody who wanted to design a shoelast. I think that here are some good ideas for making a shape like a kayak

I'd create a surface for the bottom, another for the basic shape of the deck, extrude them up and down and intersect them, and use a blend around the surface intersection chine. I'd create the channelling, cutaways and sculptural details separately, subtract them and then use edge blending on the edges and multi-surface intersections that will result. FreeCAD's offset is less sophisticated than the shelling paradigms that commercial kernels are capable of, so if I wanted to shell the craft, I'd expect to have to downgrade it to faces, offset each, add them and try to blend the intersection edges.

...how about first fixing the ships-hull and scaling it ?
Applying all the dimples and cutouts, especially the cockpit is rather a complex part to do.

The boat is slowly taking shape:

The model is too big, so I can't upload it to the forum.

P.S. I noticed some problems around sketch visibility and sketch selection - it might end up with a bug report if I can make a test case.

Lately there has been much work done on a more streamlined surface creation support in FreeCAD. Everything is still a bit rough around the edges. But the work done is starting to represent a viable solution for such tasks.

OK, thanks for the info! I didn't do any modeling for quite a while and what I see (b-splines + loft) is absolutely amazing! :D

I agree splines are a wonderful addition. As for the Loft it is a great and classic CAD command useful in a lot of tasks. But when it comes to complex surface related tasks it only goes so far.

P.S. Note that there is a Surface related workbench in FreeCAD 0.17 now by default. And i have high hopes for the other 3 separate efforts (workbenches) in this area to push the limits further and to set the bar high. As i already tried out some of the functionality they provide and there is much more control involved when it comes to surface creation. And that is just what we need to push things further in this area in the future.
