[SOLVED] Involute gear - links go out of the allowed scope

Post by carved top »

Hey all, I'm facing issues trying to get a pad out of an involute gear.

What do I do:
- Create a part
- Create a body inside the part
- Create the gear
- Click "pad"

And whatever option I choose, it doesn't work
Any help on this? I have FreeCAD 0.17 on Windows 10, even though the same version on my Ubuntu machines does the same.

Thanks in advance

Hello,

Your issue has a simple fix: the involute gear is created outside the Body and the Part. In the Model tree, just drag & drop it on the Body, and it will prevent the Links out of scope error.

Which makes me think, IMO this is a bug, the Involute Gear should be created inside whatever is the active container, Part or Body.

The involute gear is created outside of the body.

Drag-and-drop it inside the body and you can pad.

Edit: Ha, same thought, Normand. Should I create a bug report?

Hi Chris,

If you have the time, sure, go ahead.

I think it should be created in the active Body or Part if there is one.

Thanks!

Since the gear is a special sketch, should behave like one? That means:
- Create a body if there isn't one.
- insert in a body if one is active

How about attachment? Are gears attached to anything?

You've got good points, the involute gear is a 2D profile, and inside a Body, any 2D profile should be attached. So making it behave like a sketch would be logical, including opening the plane selection dialogue.

But, would there be use cases where the user wants the involute gear outside of the Body, and inside a Part container instead? Or even not inside any container at all?

Personally I don't see the point, as I prefer working in PartDesign. And the involute gear is located in the PD wb anyway. But others have not be shy saying they dislike it...

Your suggestion has my vote.

People who have not made friends yet with PartDesign can use the involute gear with Part->Extrude.

As you say, involute gear is in the PartDesign menu, so I would recommend the following

Short distance goal
- if a body is active, insert the involute gear in that body
- if no body is active, it behaves like it does now.

Long distance goal
- make involute gear attachment aware
- if a Body is active, create it inside Body
- if Part is active, create it inside Part
- else create it outside

That's reasonable.
