Help with tutorial, multiple planes in same screen?
Hi, I'm working on AndarionCG's tutorial of a bottle. (In-Tutorials and Videos-Product design tutorials library by AndarionCG-Product Design #008 Bottle) Around the 40 second point of the video, he was able to open a second sketch, then the orientation window to choose what plane to use popped up. That doesn't do that on mine. I would like to be able to start the doc. with an x-y plane, then open another sketch on the x-z plane also. Is there something in settings? Is there a particular order to get this to happen?

It worked perfectly for me.

I don't know why it did not work for you. Was there a face or datum plane already selected? In that case the sketch would be automatically attached. If nothing is selected I always see the dialog asking for which plane to use for sketch orientation.

Re: Help with tutorial, multiple planes in same screen?
Hi GeneFC,
I have tried it many ways. Found one way to utilize it. The only time I can get the origin window to open after the initial or first sketch, is to go to the tree, open the Body and highlight the "Origin or the unnamed" , then click "make new Sketch" Then it works fine.
Is it supposed to open up every time you make a new sketch? I have practiced many of the tutorials, and it has always only opened once on the first sketch.
Any thoughts?
And thanks for the help and reply.
Re: Help with tutorial, multiple planes in same screen?
I cannot make it fail, unless I select an attachable object or if the original sketch is still selected.
In the model tree the "Body" has a light blue background, indicating it is active, but otherwise I don't need to select anything, including "Unnamed" (part container), "Body", or "Origin".
It is possible there is some connection to mouse models, but I wouldn't know why. I use the Gesture mouse model.

The orientation POP UP will come up when you have nothing selected in the 3D windows and in the Model Tree. You need an active body, otherwise an error pops up.
if you have anything selected where Part Design can attach a sketch to..it will just do so and not ask for orientation.
Just, if you look at videos.. understand the dialog is different in 01.7 than it was in 0.16
i hope it helps...

Re: Help with tutorial, multiple planes in same screen?
Hi GeneFC, Mine is blue also. What also happens is, when I go to cut the two (just like the video), it will only cut when clicking pad 2 first, then pad one. If I click pad 1 first, then pad two, the entire build disappears. Frustrating. So I downloaded Version 16 from Sourcforge.net, worked right through it. No problems, worked like a charm. So I deleted version 17, reinstalled it, no change. I first thought it might be a processor issue, but I tried it on another computer and the same thing happened. My opinion is that there is a glitch somewhere. This is a cool program, but it can be frustrating. I am using the CAD settings for my mouse.
Hi Harry, I picked up on that. The orientation window is different in both. But everything worked just fine in 16, just like the video. Man, I was so happy. That was a big learning curve WIN for me. HA ha. But I try it in 17, I get nothing.HarryGeier wrote: ↑Thu May 10, 2018 6:21 pm Just, if you look at videos.. understand the dialog is different in 01.7 than it was in 0.16

Re: Help with tutorial, multiple planes in same screen?
Gene,
0.17 has a totally different structure in Part Design , as opposed to all versions before.
In 0.16 each "design" had only one "body" and therefore needed orientation ..per sketch..
in 0.17 you would not even think about that, as now your design can have multiple "bodies" each having it´s own Origin and Axis.
That confuses many beginners when they watch tutorials made with FC <0.17
you can look to my Youtube channel, there are some tutorials with 0.17

Re: Help with tutorial, multiple planes in same screen?
Harry,
I have been using FC for years, and I have kept up to date with all the pre-release versions on a regular basis. I am well aware of the new features in version 0.17.
I have no idea why you responded that way.

Re: Help with tutorial, multiple planes in same screen?
Hi GeneFC, Sorry for the confusion. I'm brand new to this stuff. I wasn't instructing, just following the rules on the important message at the top of the forums. " be clear and leave nothing out" I was just trying to mention what was going on, on my end only for the reader/posters. I appreciate all the help.
Yeh, I agree. By the time I wrote this help post, my mind was burnt out from hours of attempts. LOL.HarryGeier wrote: ↑Fri May 11, 2018 5:18 am That confuses many beginners when they watch tutorials made with FC <0.17
I did your Mower Knob tutorial. Worked out great. 2 questions. 1. Do you have your cursor set to snap to grid? How does it just snap on a point when adding new lines? I always have to use "create a coincident" to close or connect the line ends. 2. I couldn't figure out how you got only one fillet? I don't understand the referencing when you filleted the rest of the edges after the first one.HarryGeier wrote: ↑Fri May 11, 2018 5:18 am you can look to my Youtube channel, there are some tutorials with 0.17
Thanks in advance to all.
Re: Help with tutorial, multiple planes in same screen?
You can check the toggle for autoconstraints. I recommend not to use the grid in sketcher. It is only a preliminary help for layout. Finally its only the constraints that define the sketch.
A Sketcher Lecture with in-depth information is available in English, auf Deutsch, en français, en español.
