V 0.17 Part design question

Post by un1corn »

Hi all. I am trying to acquaint myself with with the new features of v 0.17 by doing a follow along with this YouTube video link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uOTWIcEWq6w&t=3s
Around 3 min's 20 sec's into the video the subscriber re-positions Sketch 2 -80 mm in the Z direction.
However, I am unable to change the value to re-position my Sketch 2, Is there an off screen activity which allows the positional values to be edited that I am not seeing?
I enclose my version of the file for your observation.
I look forward to any input.
Thanks in advance.

I am sorry if I wasted your time guys, I realised that I was trying to change the value int Base section of the tree instead of the Attachment section so now all is well.

I try this in a minute,
i looked and saw what he did. Even if you manage to do so, this is not the best practice in 0.17 . It would be better to create a datum plane and move this one instead of the sketch attachment values.

I come back aftter checking your file.

Here no Problem.. It works as in the video..

Are you sure you try to change the ATTACHMENT POSITION VALU.. not the Placement itself ???( which is fixed )

I see they are 2 variables to change : "Placement" and "Attachement" in your case you have to choice "Attachement"

Two fails in the first 30 seconds of that video:
  1. Using Grid Snap (Gaaaah!!! )
  2. Creating a conflicting constraint right off the bat and taking 18 seconds to realize it.
Not impressed.

EDIT: and a third fail: creating a datum plane attached to a face of the solid, then attaching a sketch to said datum plane.

If you're going to attach to the solid's face, you might as well forego the useless datum plane step and map the sketch to the face.

Honestly, I can't recommend following this video, IMNSHO the guy is not really proficient, or he has bad habits.

At 1:57 he creates two symmetric constraints to centre a rectangle on the origin, one to the vertical sketch axis and the other to the horizontal. Doing that induces two undetected conflicting constraints with the existing horizontal and vertical constraints on the lines.

The rectangle can be centred to the origin by creating a single symmetric constraint between two diagonally opposed points on the rectangle and the sketch origin point. This way, no conflicting constraint is added.

I won't look at the rest of the video, can't stand it. But I'm guessing the rest is up to par.
