How to project point of a body

Post by flim »

Newbie question, I have a body and want to project two points on a datum plane, but failed. I want to use the side edge as a reference for another body sketch. What is the right way to do that?

hi
Personally, I would choose the XZ plan to make a new sketch rather than a Datum plan

I think my question is not clear enough. I want to have a reference point of the top and bottom of the cylinder edge, so I can draw on XZ plane Front and reference the points on the new sketch.

Edit: I add an image that I want to have a datum line on the cylinder face.

You can create datum points. Then when you make your sketch, you will be able to use the Image Sketcher External geometry tool on these points.

  1. In the 3D view, select the upper arched edge on the solid.
  2. Click on the Image Datum Point tool.
  3. In Point parameters, the first button will be labelled "Selecting...", and the field next to it will show Fillet:Edge16 (the numbered edge might be different depending on which you selected)
  4. Press the "Reference2" button to add a second reference. It will now be labelled "Selecting..."
  5. In the 3D view, click on the XZ_Plane.
  6. In the Point parameters, there will be some error showing in red, "Attachment mode failed..."
  7. In the Attachment mode list, select Proximity point 1. This mode attaches the point on the first reference (the edge) closest to the second reference (the plane), so the point is then located at the middle of the edge.
  8. Click OK
  9. Create a second datum point on the bottom edge.

Thank you very much, I tried Datum point but failed before, when I see the error I give up, I feel lost in Attachment Mode even after read the document.

Where can I find more tutorial or examples on the Attachment Mode? I tried Google but no luck.

As far as I know, there are no Attachment tutorials yet. Somebody has to write one.

I agree that it is not very easy to use.

There is one here in the queue but a Sketcher tutorial comes first.

Chris, does your reply mean you are planning to write these tutorials?

… a little "grumpy" remark:
It would be much easier, if already in sketcher one could deliberately set "visible construction points" staying permanent.
Like the seed points, which produce the lines on extrusions e.g..
These points could also be snapped by other features (DraftWB…)
Same problem with the knot-points in Sketcher-BSpline.
