I think there is no FreeCAD "updater" (<== for lack of a better word) with Windows I don't know if you have to uninstall your old 0.17 version before installing a newer version of 0.17, or if you can just install a newer 0.17 version over an older 0.17 version. I haven't used Windows for several years (since MS stopped supporting XP) so I'm not sure... someone else will have to offer advice.

Like Bejant, to my knowledge, there is now over way to update freecad.

You don't even need to uninstall the old version,
The good thing is that you can easily keep older version if you fail loading your old files into a new version.
(well, between 0.17.13522 and 0.17.13528, you should not have any version change issue. There are "almost" the same age)

Totally different question to the original as you are talking about Ubuntu and the original is talking about Windows.

On Linux you normally keep updated via the operating system's package manager tool.

On Ubuntu, you should have installed the daily ppa and then installed FreeCAD-Daily from that. Depending on which Ubuntu version there may be a older release version of FreeCAD in another ppa or it may be in the default repositories already a part of Ubuntu.

Read the wiki for details.

On Ubuntu use the ppa not the other Linux packaging systems.
