cuban chain link

Post by scrungy_doolittle »

Does anyone happen to have a cuban chain link? modeled in freecad?

like this?
https://grabcad.com/library/cuban-chain-1

I've watched a tutorial but it was for RHINO
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkvxmYTxIH0

There is also a blender tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grtoNEK_u5Y

My basic goal is to create a cuban chain to wrap into this 2mm x 1.75mm groove.

I have tried it some time ago, I have to find the FCStd file, but don't expect a great quality.

… FC morning sport. Simple approach to a 3D-Curve.
Using "combined projection curve" from CurvesWB.

So how do you edit the s curve. Sketcher says it is an invalid sketch and't can't be edited.

Playing with it, trying to shorten and shrink things so that the chain is 3mm wide vs 50, and the links are 4 mm vs 100, and the diameter is 1mm, and the twist is 90 degrees.

When I shorten the measurement to 5mm, I get a huge curl on the other end of the link sketch.

Am I the only one, who recognizes, that the linked model from OP looks a little bit different

I have made this design, the file was too largue for uploading it here in FCStd format (I have compressed it with RAR because it compress more than the internal compressor), but if you find interesting, I can share it in FCStd format in thingiverse.com (where I have some jewellery related designs).

The problem of my link is that the link contains two steeps on the surface, because the torus surfaces are not easy to place.

Also, I don't know the exact differences between "curb" and "cuban" they are made with almost the same process (rolling a silver thick wire (or gold), cutting it, interlocking the links, soldering them, twisting them and flattened them). but sometimes the processes in curb is different, with links made from moulds. My bracelets for example are made from a thick wire. Also, there are variations depending on the size of the mandrel and the wire, a thicker wire on a smaller mandrel allows a more dense result of the bracelet or necklace.

Edit: file removed because they were not interesting, if someone needs them, contact me.

… flattening and an optional grooving of the chain link are only additional boolean operations.
The 3D-curve (as a combination of BSplines) is the essential task.
This and the linear or polar array blow up this file "a little bit" - see above.
