Ruler measuring XYZ in YZ view

Postby freedman » Wed Sep 05, 2018 8:47 pm

I imported an stl file and turned it into a wireframe, now I want to measure some stuff. When I turn the image to a set view (YZ for instance) and use the ruler it measures incorrectly because the ruler selects lines in other planes. Is there a way to make the ruler measure the plane that I view?
Thanks

Rather than use the ruler, use the Part WB measure toolbar. I have found this so useful that I created a global toolbar for it so it is available in all Workbenches. Also try to make use of snapping in draftWB.

Bance, I tried that. It doesn't work correctly all the time. The only way I know to do this is to draw a sketch on the stl wireframe and then constrain the sketch with a dimension.

Have you tried Caliper? It should work.

Have you tried Caliper from Manipulator workbench?

Edit: post was still opened and easyw-fc was faster. But he forgot to mention the workbench.

Have You tried to set Workplane to view, and Snap Lock to Workplane?

Snap Lock to plane on:

will give You dim projected to current workplane
Snap Lock to plane off:
will select global coordinates

I can't figure out how to make those work to label dims but when I measure using the Draft Dim tool I can get a local 2D measure. Thanks

I can't do Manipulator workbench because it has IP requests in it, that's just me. It sure looks like a great tool.

Manipulator WB is looking at its GitHub repo for updates as stated at first installation.
You can disable the update checking just editing your preferences as explained in the pop up menu.

Moreover I'm adding the 'update checking' dialog with its clear simple instructions ...

Easyw-fc, thank you.
When I signed on here a made a rule that if any additional code has IP I won't use it, that's my way of making a statement about security.
If it were up to me I would remove the IP module from Freecad, that shows how commited (or commitable) I am.

The WB preference is up to you, as well as what to install and in which OS, within its vulnerabilities.
