I really believe this should be easy,
but the interface keeps losing me.

there is no intuitive structure to the menu.
the interface needs to be designed so it is understandable,
not only the the professional designer and draftsman,
but to someone who knows what he wants.

Anyway,
Familiarity with FreeCAD/Toolbars should inform you that I used the PartDesign wb.
The Yellow and Blue stairsteps are the first icons on left.

I won't make this a long post - you should be familiar with:
Creating a New File.
Creating a New Part in the file (yellow stairstep). Remember, Part is not really a part, its a container for bodies which, are the real parts.
Select the Newly created Part and click the Blue staristep to create a new Body in the Part
(so,if making 5 gizmo's (5 actual parts), you want 5 bodies. All contained in One 'Part')

See what I mean about syntax? To be clearer:
New File = container for Parts
Parts = containers of bodies
Bodies = the actual gizmo parts.

Having said that:
Create a New File - save it Named as Assembly One
Create Two Parts in the File - One called Part_Nut_and_Bolt, the other called Part_Box_and_Lid
Create Two Bodies in each of the Parts just created. Name them...

Get the idea?

CATIA by Dassault Systèmes (which also owns Solidworks BTW) is one of the very few high-end commercial parametric modelers, widely used in the transportation industry (automotive, rail, aeronautics).

And also HeeksCAD, another open-source CAD program based on OCC which, for a time, was more advanced than FreeCAD; but which has now more or less stalled.

FreeCAD's founder Juergen Riegel had experience with CATIA at the company he worked for, and was quite fond of it. If he had been familiar with a mid-range parametric modeler instead, FreeCAD would probably be very different today.

Also, there was already an Extrude command in the Part workbench, so it made sense to use a different name.

I was trained by CATIA, Pro-Engineer CadKey, Inventor. I don't remember the words "Pad", "Additive Pipe"... etc.
I worked in the Automotive, Medical and Rocket industry. I have patents and worked with Patent Attorneys - I don't remember anyone saying "Pad it", we said 'Extrude it".
