FreeCAD plugin for Cura - how to use?

There is a FreeCAD plugin for Cura, which enables Cura to open FreeCAD files directly. The only effect I could see was that FreeCAD files are offered in the file open dialog, but trying to do so always failed.

Has anyone successfully opened a FreeCAD file?

Came here following breadcrumbs after spending too long trying to get the FreeCAD Cura Engine Plug-In to work but perhaps it was worthwhile as it led me here?
