Use any Model or: Make 3 pads all stacked one on each other, so now we have pad-zero,pad001,pad002 and sketch-zero,sketch001,sketch002. Normally at this point pad002 is selected showing the entire model, now open sketch-zero and close it, then open sketch001 and close it, the model disappears. That doesn't seem right.

Your model does not disappear. Here is one I generated and it fails. I selected faces and sketched on them.

I can reproduce this in your file. Also, Sketch001 and Sketch002 cannot be properly edited. Weird.
However, if I recreate both sketches and the pads, the behavior returns to normal.
