Fix STL file with large holes

Hello FreeCAD community

I just started using FreeCAD and I like that it is rich and user-friendly. I have a number of STL files similar to the attached one. They have small errors (probably can be fixed by smoothing) and large holes. How can I fix these large holes?

Is this a 3D scan that you need to make something around? Probably use Meshmixer or Blender to fix the STL and then import the fixed one in FreeCAD to work with it...

I wonder what you want to do with such in FreeCAD .

FreeCAD is no 3D scene creator like Blender , Poser or the like. microelly2 , for instance creates shoes , but i doubt he uses scans as a model

To me it looks like the data came from a structured light scanner where you get the data from several views. When looking at the quality of the mesh then I would say that something must be wrong with the view alignment and also the merging of the views produces many self-intersections.
Because of this bad quality of the mesh data I don't think you find an application that is able to fill these holes in a sensible way.
