Hi Roy

Thank you for pointing me to the preferences. Bu what do I do when I get there and how do I import a dxf or dwg file. I have a dxf file that I got from a local CAD guy and I would like to modify it.

Can you help?

Here is how I imported the DXF file in BricsCAD FreeCAD:
  1. In the menu select: Edit->Preference...
  2. In the Preferences dialog click on Import-Export in the left bar.
  3. Go to the DXF tab.
  4. Check the 'Use legacy python importer' option.
  5. Close the dialog by clicking the OK button.
  6. Start a new document.
  7. In the menu select: File->Import...
  8. Select the DXF file.
  9. Save the FreeCAD document.
But if you want to modify the DXF, as in: create a new DXF, FreeCAD may not be the obvious choice.

EDIT: I mistakenly wrote 'BricsCAD' instead of 'FreeCAD'.

Mate – thank you. It worked. I did not have “Use legacy python importer” ticked.

Thank you.

Now this is my inexperience showing. Yes, I do want to work on the file and make modifications…. How do I achieve this???

What am I not asking?

Also, you said “BricsCAD” – this has confused me. I have FreeCAD?

Thank you so much

Guys
Thank you.... it took all day, but I found it. I got the instruction to: to use the convert to sketch tool" from the draft tool bar. Then it took a while to find what it looked like. On my programme there was only the image and not a description.

It worked, but what I got from the conversion was very strange it has all sorts of lines like the old sphyrograph...I will have to talk with my CAD guy. In the meantime I re-did it from ground zero. A good exercise. I am still not confident going 3D....it is scary.

Thanks. Time to feed the girls and the dogs.

Sorry, that should have been 'FreeCAD' Instead of 'BricsCAD'. BricsCAD is another program I use, hence my mistake.

Thank you.

It is a steep and hard learning curve. I do so very little of it. But the locals are a little slow and it is the country, so deadlines are something to be avoided.

Thanks again.
