Toy Sword Blade - shape design help

Post by Tilarta »

I'm working on a 3D model for a action figure sword accessory, but can't figure out how to make the blade shape I am trying to create:

The wedge shape will make the correct object shape when viewed from the front, but I don't know how to put a triangular prism on the edge of the blade to make the sharp cutting edge.

Does anyone know how I might design the shape I am intending to create?

Hi Tilarta, and welcome! There are many examples in the forum; do a search for "knife" or "sword" ("blade" will return a bunch of airfoil topics). Here are a few topics to get you started:

Welcome to the forum, I made a sword that is approximately what you want. Study the file and ask questions if you need some more explanation

Clever use of chamfer and fillet for the edge. I should remember that :) But mapping sketch to datum plane that is mapped to a face is the same as mapping the sketch to that face directly - does not avoid toponaming issues.
More robust solution is mapping to XZ plane and shifting it with expression linked to Pad001 length:

Thanks for the help everyone.

I decided to go with the simplest approach, Boolean Cut.
But I haven't gotten it quite right yet:

When I performed the Cut Operation, it missed the lower edge of the blade near the pommel and didn't create the edge along the full length of the blade.

Is there a way to move the Cut Objects so they align along the entire length of the blade?
I tried changing the angle, but it just rotated the object away from the blade.

Could you please attach the actual file you are working on so it could be examined and proper suggestions made?

You can map the prisms to the edges of the blade. Select prism. Select its Map mode and press the 3 point button. As first selection select lower vertex of the corresponding blade edge. Second selection should be that edge, mapping mode - Z tangent to edge.

I got the lower half of the blade shaped.
But ran into a problem when trying to shape the upper half:

It didn't quite mesh neatly.
