Convert a draft to a face

Post by Buddy Hy »

I just started.
I created a wedge in draft mode.
How do I make a surface from it?

(The pivot is a hole.)

Hi and welcome to the forum!

You can use Draft Upgrade, but as a mere guess I assume that's not what you want. Have a look at Sketcher, and PartDesign and Part workbench if you want to model 3D solids.
To get better advice you can show us what you finally want to have.

I tried Upgrade, but nothing happened - Not even an error message, so I don't know what's going on.
I had a go at Sketcher, but it's not accurate enough.

Here's what I want to draw in 3D...

I still think you should have a look at Sketcher. The constraints can replace lots of manual calculations.

Sketcher is as accurate as you are. ;) Will never be an issue.
Can you attach you're FreeCAD file so we can look why Upgrade doesn't work.

Well I had a quick play again with Sketcher, and I have to zoom in (which is not easy) every time I want to place a point then zoom out (again, not easy) then try to zoom back in (ditto) to where I assume the next point will be because the dark blue text on a dark grey background is impossible to read - and hope that I get it right because for the life of me I can't find out how to modify it!

Is there some sort of setting that I need to change to read the text and manually enter/modify co-ordinates?

Just tried to Upgrade my object and I finally get an error message:

"Unable to upgrade these objects."

Real helpful. Hope one of you guys can see where I went wrong.

Because Draft Upgrade didn't work on your original geometry I deleted your two line segments, then created two new ones using Endpoint Snap, selected the two new line segments and two existing arcs and used Draft > Upgrade to Upgrade these 4 edges to one Wire, upgraded the Wire to a Face, Upgraded the circle to a Face, and used Part WB > Boolean Subtraction to make a Cut subtraction of the circular Face from the wedge Face.

Thanks bejant, I wonder why my lines weren't working?
I'd hate to go through a complex shape and find out it couldn't be upgraded and had to redo each segment individually until it worked.

I zoomed in and found that, despite me using CTRL snaps, the elements weren't joining up (I tried to measure the distance, but the measuring tool isn't working - "no point picked" keeps coming up - but it'll in the nano-meters).

I can't seem to find the "Endpoint Snap" tool for lines (or anything else), where is it buried?

Is there a way to find out which elements are close, but not connected? (Without zooming in to micro scale?)

In Draft the elements are not connected only placed in the right position. If you move any of these elements they will no longer be connected, and that's what you may have done. As said above, you have to use a different approach to really connect the elements.
