Stuck with Basic Design Tutorial 0.17

Hi
Absolute newbie to FreeCad here. I'm a fairly able user of computers, and know how to use things like Inkscape, and The Gimp.
That doesn't appear to be much use here though.
I can't find this exact problem by searching, so apologies if it has been asked before.
Basically I can draw the basic body of the piece. I can draw and dimension the box for the "pocket" but when I select the upper and lower horizontal sides of the box, I'm not seeing the second box which I assume is the "external geometry", so I can't progress any further.

I really haven't got a clue what I'm doing, what most of the terms mean, or much of anything!

I thought that by working step by step through the tutorial I might get some idea of how to use the program, and up to that point I seem to have managed, albeit with one or two hiccups.

Incidentally, looking at the uTube tutorial,
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYI0gvxCYeI
I'm at around 00:50.
It doesn't seem to tie in with the written tutorial.
Thanks in advance
Dave

To toggle the visibly of objects you can use the spacebar:

To make it selectable, we switch the combo view to model tab and select the last sketch made (Sketch003) on the sloped plane. Then using the spacebar, make it visible.

Thanks for the replies so far.
I've updated to the version of the software from the main FreeCad site linked from the top.
Can't remember where I had the previous version from.

This is the "About" info now

OS: Windows 10
Word size of OS: 64-bit
Word size of FreeCAD: 64-bit
Version: 0.18.16131 (Git)
Build type: Release
Branch: releases/FreeCAD-0-18

Python version: 3.6.6
Qt version: 5.6.2
Coin version: 4.0.0a
OCC version: 7.3.0
Locale: English/UnitedKingdom (en_GB)

I'll be honest I've been picking at the tutorials, read through some and decided to have a go at the one I have.
As I said I managed OK, to get the main body of the drawing done, with the padding and so on.

I understand the part in the tutorial about toggling visibility thanks, and I can see Sketch 003. However I can't see the other rectangle that it appears to be inside in the tutorial, and selecting the upper and lower horizontals does nothing.

What is the "External Geometry vertex"? As I say I can see Sketch 003, but nothing else to select. I do understand what is meant by the vertex.

TBH, I think I'll start again. I wonder if I've messed something up.

Looking in the Report view I'm seeing
"App::Document::recompute(): cyclic dependency detected"
If I "Revert" to the original save.
Looking at other problems it seems that this might be a problem?

Looking at the file attached to your first post I can only conclude that you are able to follow the tutorial. But this image seems to confuse you:
Image

There are two rectangles. The smaller one is in Sketch003. Two of its sides, the magenta lines, have already been added as external geometry to the current sketch: Sketch004. The larger rectangle is the one you have to create in the current sketch. The tutorial does not mention this step. To finish Sketch004 you need to constrain the new rectangle to the endpoints of the magenta lines.

Thanks Roy. That seems to have sorted me out.
I was expecting Sketch 004 to magically appear at some stage.
I've managed to complete the tutorial, and now I can have a mess around with it, and hopefully understand the process better.

It's mostly down to me trying to do my usual trick of trying to run before I can walk.
