Draft Workbench - why is my pattern so faint?

Post by rhombus »

Another beginner question. I'm following the tutorial in the Manual: Traditional 2D drafting https://www.freecadweb.org/wiki/Manual: ... D_drafting.

When I try to set a pattern following the instructions, the resulting pattern appears to be very faint. Compare the image in the tutorial with my screenshots:
pattern1.png
pattern1.png (115.99 KiB) Viewed 1225 times
pattern2.png
pattern2.png (94.77 KiB) Viewed 1225 times
Any idea what might be going on here?

I've also attached the FreeCAD file for reference

Your Pattern Size is 0.05. In the tutorial it is 0.005.

Before changing this value you may need to change your Units settings:
Menu > Edit > Preferences... > Click on General in the left bar > Activate the Units tab > Change the number of decimals to a higher value.

I seem to remember a discussion about the "Number of decimals" setting and how it should not restrict user input (as it does here*). I cannot find it now. Was a conclusion ever reached?

* If the number of decimals is 2 the user cannot enter 0.005 for the Pattern Size.

I remember there was at least one such discussion, probably more than one. Couldn't find it either.

I recommend setting precision to 8 decimals (8 because it's enough to be within standard tolerance of 1e-7 mm after rounding). Sure it may look ugly, but at least it should prevent nasty surprises.

Hi Roy -- thanks for your reply and the hint; before posting I'd already tried adjusting the precision (and entering 0.005 as the pattern size) and it only makes the display issue worse:

pattern3.png (111.55 KiB) Viewed 1114 times
pattern4.png
pattern4.png (91.58 KiB) Viewed 1114 times
I don't understand what the pattern size means. Is it the spacing between the lines?

Thanks for the hint. As I've written in my reply to Roy, increased precision doesn't resolve the issue. I can enter 0.005, but the problem only gets worse.

Okay, something isn't right with my display.

Proceeding with the same tutorial, I made the arc for the door. The tutorial doesn't mention this, but clearly, the arc uses a dashed line, so that's what I set.

Here's the original arc (selected), draw style set to 'Solid':
arc2.png
arc2.png (115.36 KiB) Viewed 1108 times

Here's the arc with the draw style set to 'Dashed':
arc3a.png
arc3a.png (112.99 KiB) Viewed 1108 times

Is this caused by some view setting? Or is it a driver problem?
