Save a part externally from within an assembly.

I have created an assembly where I have drawn all the parts in the same file. Now I realize I want to save one of the parts as an external file to be able to use it in other assemblies as well. Is this currently possible? Ideally i want to preserve the linked parts in the assembly as well. So they point to the external file instead
