Step non solid after import, Varicad viewer produces solid

Post by freecad-heini-1 »

In the last two weeks I often had parts that Freecad did not import as solid models.
I tested the different Step Import options, unfortunately without success. There is a free viewer from Varicad, with which you can import and save step data.
https://www.varicad.com/en/home/products/download/
Data saved via this detour arrived in Freecad in almost all cases as solids.
Why can't Freecad do this?

Who knows the Freecad Step Importer and want's to help to compare the difference between the customer's step and Varicad?
Maybe the Importer can be improved.
I have the impression that it has been better and somehow got worse within the last weeks.

Zipped I upload the two files. The original file of my customer was created in Cimatron.

Many greetings
Wilfried

Hi @freecad-heini-1
would you post your FC info and Import Settings and the picture of the result?

I don't think so...
from your file it seems the step model has some issues (overlapping or similar)
Varicad probably has a sort of auto healing... btw I found in many case the opposite... FC was loading fine and Varicad not...
Probably this is an occasion to test the new 'Analysis Situs on Linux'

Hi Maurice,
thank you very much for your hint to Analysis Situs.
I installed the 64 bit Windows 10 version under PlayOnLinux in Xubuntu 18.04 and tried some things.
With autorepair I was able to repair the part into a solid. I exported it to brep, import in Freecad, the result was a solid model. Autorepair, very nice and great.
Best regards
Wilfried
