Conic extrusion?

Post by sergio687 »

Hi, I'm new in FreeCAD. Maybe the work I'm trying to do is too difficult for the experience I hace with this software, but here it is, maybe you can help me. This piece is basically an intersection of 3 cones: The first two are elliptical cones with the base wider than the top, and the left part which is a circular cone with the top wider than the base. Then, the interior is hollow, with the elliptical cones inverted from the previous ones. I've checked a couple tutorials online, and I've seen that people usually start making a sketch (I've done it) and then they'd normally pad it to extrude, then pocket it to remove material. But that'd give me cylindrical shapes, not the cones I need to make the piece.

I've already tried doing it on Blender (I know its primary use is not CAD, but tried anyway) and I could actually do it, but I had to make the 3 cones, taking notes of every dimension and position for every shape and boolean I made. It was a nightmare, and the piece was virtually impossible to tweak without making messing it up or starting from scratch. I hope I can make this piece on FreeCAD without resorting to do it with cones and booleans because it'd take a while and would be harder to modify later if this prototype doesn't work as intended.

Is there any way? Thanks in advance for your answers.

Below I attach the draft I made on 2D on another software (just for reference, I'm trying to make the basic shape and slowly adding the insides later) and a FreeCAD file with the first two sketches (I put them as surfaces and alligned them just in case).

Also, here're my specs, just to be sure not to break any rules here:
OS: Windows 10
Word size of OS: 64-bit
Word size of FreeCAD: 64-bit
Version: 0.18.4 (GitTag)
Build type: Release
Branch: releases/FreeCAD-0-18
Hash: 980bf9060e28555fecd9e3462f68ca74007b70f8
Python version: 3.6.6
Qt version: 5.6.2
Coin version: 4.0.0a
OCC version: 7.3.0
Locale: Spanish/Peru (es_PE)

Thanks again.

I do not understand what you are trying to do, but I can offer a suggestion on a way to make an elliptical cone. Create 2 sketches, one for the bottom and one for the top of the cone, these sketches containing ellipses of the appropriate shape and size. Move one of the sketches to the top and the other sketch to the bottom and loft between them.

Welcome to Freecad and the forum

To solve your problems:
- Delete the wires you made from the sketches
- Place both sketches in the body
- Give one of the sketches a Z value
- Create an Additive loft with the sketches

Thanks to both @TheMarkster and @Willem. I think I've understood it. Yes, that's what I was trying to do.
