Trouble with STEP files | was- Any way to edit iges files
Hello all,
New to FreeCAD and have been teaching myself a lot of it thanks to all the tutorials out and about. I'm using 0.13 1830 (Git) and I can't seem to be able to edit .iges drawings. Opens just fine, can select lines and faces, but when I try to add a sketch onto a surface FreeCAD says "You need a planar face as support for a sketch!" Id there something that I'm not doing / missing, or is it just not possible to work on - edit - fix an .iges file?
Now I can open .step files, (or I should say, used to be able to, trying to do so now results in an immediate core dump kind of crash, don't know what i did to mess it up), and the .step can be edited, changed, etc. (still works in my windows version) no problem. Just can't get why the iges drawings are being such a pain.
Hope I have made my problem understandable.
I would also like to say thank you to all the people that have produced tutorials, oth video and written. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! they have greatly reduced the learning curve.

Re: Any way to edit iges files?
Hi Mark,
have a look at this thread: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=4270&hilit=edit+iges#p33398
I think this explains why this is not possible.
Cheers

Re: Any way to edit iges files?
Thank you wmayer, I had searched for days and that is the first thread that I have seen on the subject. Makes sense, though I was hoping there was some way around it. The only thing i have come up with that "kind of" works is to import it into sketchup and work on it there. That in it's self would be OK if the part I was importing didn't have over 150,000 lines generated in the process. Not having 64 hexabytes of ram and a 37 terahertz cpu, trying to do anything with that many lines in sketchup is almost beyond belief.
I guess the best answer would be to just build the part from scratch and get it right my own self. Which, in all reality, is not a bad thing being that I am still new and learning.
Thank you again for the quick response. I am sure that I will have more questions on down the road but that takes care of the big one I had for now.

Re: Any way to edit iges files?
Sometimes a face looks like a plane but in fact they are represented as a b-spline surface. This is rather a limitation of the sketcher.Opens just fine, can select lines and faces, but when I try to add a sketch onto a surface FreeCAD says "You need a planar face as support for a sketch!" Id there something that I'm not doing / missing, or is it just not possible to work on - edit - fix an .iges file?
If the application even simply crashes when loading a file then this might be an indication for a weak graphic card or a bad driver. The only option you have here is trying to upgrade the driver. Now I can open .step files, (or I should say, used to be able to, trying to do so now results in an immediate core dump kind of crash, don't know what i did to mess it up), and the .step can be edited, changed, etc. (still works in my windows version) no problem. Re: Any way to edit iges files?
It's not crashing on loading/saving ANY file, it's crashing when loading/saving .STEP/.STP files, everything else is fine . It was working great until I started installing other things like HeeksCAD/CAM and the Blender CAM package as well as a failed attempt to install FreeCAD with the (pre beta) CAM workbench. Somewhere along the line I broke something. Don't think it's a problem with FreeCAD or video drivers/card at all, but some package that went higgly with the other installs.... don't know which one to try to replace to fix it, but am planing a new hard drive and fresh install of the latest Kubuntu (I'm on 12.04 now) so that should make it shiny. Oh, video card is half decent Nvidia running the 310.14 Nvidia drivers.wmayer wrote:Sometimes a face looks like a plane but in fact they are represented as a b-spline surface. Re: Any way to edit iges files?
If this is on Windows you must check where the other applications installed their DLLs because this sounds like FreeCAD now uses DLL of a different OCC version. And this causes totally undefined behaviour. It's not crashing on loading/saving ANY file, it's crashing when loading/saving .STEP/.STP files, everything else is fine .

Re: Trouble with STEP files | was- Any way to edit iges files
Hello Mark,
On the daily build package, STEP export was changed from prior versions. When exporting to STEP, you need to select your shape first, then in the drop down, select "STEP with colors", and type a name without extension, it will be added automatically.
As for your import trouble, could you share the file? The forum attachment utility only takes FCStd files and zip archives, so you may compress it or host it somewhere else.

Re: Trouble with STEP files | was- Any way to edit iges files
OK, here is a small random part that I did on WinXP>FreeCAD and exported it as a .step file. I then try to open it with my Linux install (0.14 2411) and get the same error message as above. Like i said, it was working then after a few other programs were installed, ANYTHING having to do with the .step format is just broken. To my mind, there is a broken or misconfigured link somewhere in my libs or whatever lib(s) it is that handles the .step format is / has gone bad.normandc wrote:Hello Mark,

The same files that have stopped working with my Linux install are just fine with the win install.
