Newbie - box with repetive cutouts

Postby K3vin » Sat Mar 28, 2020 11:27 am

Hi!

I have just started on using FreeCAD, I am really liking what I have seen so far!
I have some prior experience in 3D CAD (learned Solidworks and autoCAD over 25 years ago), so I think I understand the basics, but I have some trouble understanding how I should go about to model my project.

I am trying to model a slightly fancier version of a screwdriver holder, like this.

Image

In Part design have modeled the 'slot' for a single screwdriver. I used the diameter of the screwdriver shaft as a base for the other parameters. So if I increase the diameter, the related dimension change accordingly. So far no issues.

My thinking was, as a second step, to create a base cube and substract the slots for each screwdriver (with various diameters and heights) from this.

I am not sure how to do this. Is this even possible? Or am I trying to do things in the wrong order?

Any help to get me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated! I am not too lazy to read documenation, but for now I don't know where to start!

Please show us what you have so far for better guidance. There are myriads of ways to achieve that and your description so far is quite vague.

Sorry, I can understand it might be difficult to imagine what I am trying to do :-)
I have made a screenshot.

I have modelled the grey cutout.
I want to substract multiple of these cutouts from the green base.

Does this make it any cleare? I could also upload the file if that helps?

Here is an example. Done entirely in Part Design workbench.

No need for cubes, and cylinders etc. IMO much simpler and easier.

@drmacro,
Thank you, that is very helpfull. I isunderstood how the linear pattern works.
If you don't mind a couple of questions:
The design I am trying to make is not a simple extrusion. The first part of the 'hole' has to be larger to accomodate for the base of the screwdriver.
The cutouts aren't going to be identical. There are going to be 5 screwdrivers with a 6mm shaft, 4 with a 4mm shaft and a few with a 3mm shaft. Could I use your solution for this?

Here I show how to make the hole different size (basically a counterbore, so you could even use the Hole tool ...I think, have to try it).

You can make different sketches for each size screw driver.

Note: In this example I used external geometry from Sketch001 in Sketch002 to locate the center of the circle defining the counterbore.
Note: I'm attaching the sketches to the base plane, not faces of the model, so this pic shows looking at the bottom
(I.e. the pockets are coming up from the bottom.)

Both, thank you very much!
I am going to study the examples and see if i can grasp the concepts.
Again, thank you very much!
