stuff trying to complete the 'sketch'

Postby ajoeiam » Sun Apr 05, 2020 5:50 pm

Greetings

OS: Debian GNU/Linux bullseye/sid (LXQt/lightdm-xsession)
Word size of OS: 64-bit
Word size of FreeCAD: 64-bit
Version: 0.19.20209 (Git) AppImage
Build type: Release
Branch: master
Hash: 5fc4a26a00390e91cbf91848b766b68ad87e5917
Python version: 3.8.2
Qt version: 5.12.5
Coin version: 4.0.0
OCC version: 7.4.0

Please attached 'model'.

I can't find a way to make this a 'complete face' .
Means I can't 'pad' it or 'pocket' it or anything else.

Have spent about an hour searching the forums looking for some way of constraining the last 2 degrees floating.
(Don't think it should be necessary but ????? (what do I know?).)

Ideas/suggestions please?

TIA

Constraining and being able to pad/pocket are 2 different problems.
  • Fully constraining : just add a symmetry between opposite points
  • Padding/pocketing : the arc is a construction geometry (so is ignored to build solids). Just toggle it to normal geometry
Patched file attached.

Interesting (and quite frustrating at the same time) re: constraints.
I tried to use parallel between the two horizontals, tried using perpendicular between horizontal and vertical (which should work) and nothing worked. Really not obvious that a 'symmetrical' restraint would fit the bill.
Oh well - - - - some more 'things to learn'.

How does one 'toggle it to normal geometry'?

:o   Parallel between 2 horizontals, or perpendicular between horizontal & vertical, is just redundant hence harmful.
The problem is that the shape of your sketch is fully constrained, but it can still freely shift in the XY plane (as it has no "root"). Lot of solutions exist : symmetry as I do, or add a coincidence between 1 point and origin, or fix X & Y dimensions between 1 point and the origin, ....

Thanks - - - not what I would consider symmetricality - - - - but whatever works.

Attached the file with another feature but I need to add some more and not sure how to do this.
As a machinist I would put a 'pocket' on the through bore.
That's not how its done here.
So if I need to have a 55.0 mm counterbore that is 20 mm deep centered on the through hole - - - what are the steps?
Need to be able to depict a snap ring groove in that counterbore too. (How do I do that?)

Have tried using the 'Pocket' function but that's not giving me what I want.

There is no though hole in your file. ;)

Pocket seems to give me what you want or something like it?

WRT constraints use the curser to grab various parts of your sketch and try to move them, that'll give you an idea of what needs to be done.

Hope that is near what you have in mind. Used Sketcher_CarbonCopy to link geometry of hole sketches to base sketch. Pockets direction is reversed so the pockets go up. I changed a little constraints in your first sketch. If somewhere there will be a tangency between elements (here lines and arc) better constraint it as such.

For holes with counterbore I recommend the PartDesign Hole feature. It can do it in one step.
