[solved] Really silly problem

Here is drawing with the bottom of a simple cube i cant pad

https://forum.freecadweb.org/download/f ... &id=113763

I keep getting the error " In order to use partdesign you need an active body etc"

My simple box shape 130mmx130mm is fully restrained but it wont pad.

I have spent two days looking for an answer to this but no luck.

I hope someone will tell me what I am missing here!

I restrained the horizontal and vertical dimensions and set the LH bottom corner
half that distance from the origin (-65mm).

The sketch was then fully constrained
and in part design I reselected the four edges and tried to do a pad but failed.

Regards

You've to make a body active (like the error message tells you). To do that, you can either double click on a body in the object tree or right click / toogle active body (out of my mind, I'm on my mobile and therefore didn't check your file).

You have to create a body object by clicking the blue staircase looking button.
Draw your sketches inside this body object, then you can pad.

You have created a sketch from Sketcher WB, it is not contained in a Part Design Body and therefore cannot be padded.
If you create a sketch using the new sketch tool in PD WB, it will automagically create a PD body, make it active and place the sketch inside. This is the recommended workflow.
You can create a body in PD and drag and drop the sketch into it, then padding should work.

Thanks all

The new part and then sketcher solves the issue.

I told you it was a silly problem

Maybe worth having a look at some tutorials around PartDesign Wb, @dubstar-04's look pretty good for a beginner: https://www.youtube.com/user/MarthamEng ... _polymer=1

Tony, next time don't wait so long to ask for help here. Replies usually happen quickly, look at the time stamp of your first post and those of the first few replies....

Thanks bejant

I tried to look for a solution initially myself but my respect for FreeCAD is
greatly raised by the wonderful folk on this forum. I do hope that in due course
I shall be able to help others as those who have helped me.!

I have printed out all the sketcher wiki tutorials I could find and these will
take some time to digest. Then onto the partdesign WB stuff.

I have not gone down the road of Youtube yet because I feel I need a better
grasp on FreeCAD before I do that - very addictive though <g>.

I have now completed 75 study hours on the program starting from the very
beginning and I am trying to do 1 hour a day learning FreeCAD whilst I continue
to run my one man professional structural practice.

Fortunately I have worked from my home for many years so the current lockdown
restrictions are a nuisance but not totally devastating for me.

regards

I also recommend looking at video tutorials to get a quick idea of how to use the software, in this case, I would suggest video tutorials for product design, to learn about Sketcher and PartDesign.

Written tutorials are useful but are a pain to write correctly, as if you don't explain with detail a step, a new user may get completely lost.

Some people learn by reading while others learn by seeing things in action.
