Hi .
Is it possible to add a thread to an existing part using the fastners WB? Ie tap the plain shaft to thread. I've added a screenshot.

It's not possible only the other way round if you want to thread a hole.

There have been recently some requests concernng this. Might be wirth to create a counterpart for the "arbitrary length threaded rod for tapping holes". If you don't need high precision you could use that rod instead of the thread, but diameter and shape may be slightly off the specs.

What do you think about a "positive" arbitrary length rod?

Hi
2 solutions
if your end of shaft is shorter as a large treared nut , you use one and substract it
you can replace the end of the shaft by a treared rod

Just throw a helix on the end and cut whatever shape thread you like.

I would have put the file up but I got an error message saying file too large. (1.711Mb)

You could try using the ThreadProfile workbench. I have been using it for a short while and it has a lot of different standard thread sizes available.

Alternatively in the fasteners workbench there's a threaded shaft tool that you can use.

Only almost. The threaded shaft is designed for tapping, and will thus create the exact negative of nut which is different from a threaded bolt. Nevertheless this is sufficient in almost all cases.

hehe, couldn't expand too much due to time constraints at the time of writing the message, but I was also thinking using it to create the negative, apply a tolerance and cut :) of course, this implies knowing what tolerance to apply, and HOW to apply the tolerance in FreeCAD which is another can of worms all-together (can't simply scale due to TPI being correct).

Hi, yes thanks, I was looking at trying this method if not able to use Fastners WB to do similar.

The nut method looks like a neat way of doing it. I wonder if the shaft is longer than on nut, if adding several nuts and doing a cut would work.
