Best way to create a thread and nut

Post by FreeFlyman »

Hello,

FR

I am new to FreeCad and have a hard time figuring out how to easily create an ISO thread and nut.

Between an addon manager which does not work on my version 0.18, PartDesign_Hole (https://wiki.freecadweb.org/PartDesign_Hole) with which I cannot create a net, BOLTSFC which seems to be obsolete and the addon ThreadProfile in which I can't find an ISO library, I'm a little confused.

Would you be able to guide me towards an updated and more or less successful solution?

Bonjour et welcome to the forum!

I recommend to use 0.19. It is very stable, has less errors than 0.198 and AddonManger works.

I consider 0.18 obsolete, it has had no work for over a year.

Addon manager works (at least for me) well in 0.19. I've use 0.19 exclusively for about 2 years with no issues.

You can add the threaded fasteners workbench by hand to 0.18. But I would spend the effort to upgrade to 0.19 instead.

The fasteners workbench is definitely the easiest method to get nuts and bolts.

@ FreeFlyman

Hello

What result do you want to achieve?

A fully parametric design of a screw, whose values can be modified in a table
and thus all dimensional ranges of the screw can be covered with one model,
or just a simple model to insert in a comprehensive model or assembly?

For the second use case, there is the option to download the desired threaded parts as a STEP file
from https://www.traceparts.com/en.
A registration is required.

Hello,

Thank you for your super quick responses.

I understood that I had an interest in installing version 1.19 but do not understand how to do this update on my windows 64bits

On the page https://www.freecadweb.org/downloads.php I can only load version 1.18.4 and I only found a zip point https://github.com/FreeCAD/FreeCAD/archive/master.zip on the page https://github.com/FreeCAD/FreeCAD/rele ... g/0.19_pre
which does not contain an installer for windows.

Would you perhaps have a solution for me?

@RedBaron

I need to create parts with threads and tappings if possible with Iso dimensions and then print them.
The solution exposed on https://wiki.freecadweb.org/PartDesign_Hole suits me fine but I can't get it to display a thread.
I visited the site https://www.traceparts.com but all the screws that I tested are also presented without thread.

Now I understand your concerns.

FreeCAD 0.19 does not currently include an installer. It is simply unpacked as described on the download page and from the directory /bin in the unpacked FreeCad directory the freecad.exe is started with a double click.
Windows

Binary developer builds (no compiling necessary) are available. Download the highest revision of the .7z

The builds are portable and do not require an installation. Extract the file using 7zip and start the application by double clicking on FreeCAD.exe in the bin sub-directory of the extracted package.
For example

Download https://www.7-zip.org/
Download the FreeCAD_0.19.*-Win-Conda_vc14.x-x86_64.7z file from the release page
Extract the binary from the .7z
Run the FreeCAD.exe file to be found in the bin folder.

The second concern is explained in this tutorial :

Good luck and kind regards

@RedBaron

Thanks a lot, you have changed my life :)

I downloaded the zip but didn't understand that it contains an executable version of FreeCad.

Addon workbench Fasteners contains many predefined threaded nuts and bolts.

Why FreeCad officials don't recognize the 0.19 version and include into the FreeCad.org download page?
I am downloading 0.19 and will try.

@wagnerlip
FreeCAD 0.19 isn't on the main page because it is currently an Development Version. There are some things that have to be tested and documented.
