manually resized datumplane loses its length after saving

Postby krisA » Mon Jan 11, 2021 10:04 pm

Hello,

First of all, FreeCAD is a great tool and I use it for several years now. I try to follow and use new functionality as it is added.

I now have an issue with a datumplane that I try to give a fixed size.
The original created datumplane with its automatic size is shown in ori-size.png.
ori-size.png
ori-size.png (157.55 KiB) Viewed 643 times
Then I switch Resize Mode to Manual and give a Length (2m) and Width (1m).
Everything looks fine, see man-size.png.

Then a I save the FreeCAD document and close it.
After reopening it shows the datum plane with a different Length, see after-save-size.png.

The datumplane is very basic and made from 3 endpoints (1,0,0), (0,1,0) and (0,0,1) of lines created in the 2 sketches.

Is there a known work around for this issue?

I use this version of FreeCAD:
OS: Windows 10 (10.0)
Word size of OS: 64-bit
Word size of FreeCAD: 64-bit
Version: 0.19.23546 (Git)

Yes looks like a bug. The Length is not properly restored.
edit: actually it is not even written to the document so of course it is not properly restored.

Thanks for confirming this, kisolre.
It may not be a big issue but maybe it would get some attention if it is reported as a bug.
A fix should not be that complex I think.

The question is, if the size should be seen as something to be worth being stored in the file or if it is rather an editing aid. In the latter case it probably should not occur in the properties section of the DatumPlane.

issue #4540 created.

If a visual aid is created and adjusted now why will it need to be readjusted each time the file is reopen?

you could create work plans yourself using triangular areas that do not change. I do it like that.

My initial post was only showing a very limited example to make the issue clear.
What I actually want to use datumplanes for is for positioning lots of sketches that should be referenced to one another.
The real application is trying to reconstruct the hull of a ship from ancient plans.
I need to make 31 sketches of station lines and 5 sketches of waterline curves.
See the next image of what I had in mind for the datumplanes.
realDatumplanes.png
realDatumplanes.png (482.81 KiB) Viewed 390 times
And what do I get after saving my file is this:
savedDatumplanes.png
savedDatumplanes.png (604.84 KiB) Viewed 390 times
Turning on and off visibility of the datumplanes is easy but resizing all of them takes too long.
@chrisb: you have a point, I can still select a datumplane and position my sketch on it and go on but it feels to me as if I draw a line of 1 meter and get it back after saving the file as one of 1 cm.

Just a hint: You don't need DatumPlanes to position your sketches. As they seem to be equidistant, you can well attach them to the main plane and use an offset.

The vertical ones are indeed 2 groups that you can call equidistant.
The horizontal ones are not parallel to a base plane but equidistant.
I can also select 2 lines that I know are in a datumplane and then start a sketch.
It will offer me an attachment to a ThreePointsPlane.

That is also a workaround.
Nevertheless, my intent was to signal an issue that could be improved.
