Without such additional behaviour it wouldn't be stable at all, because one of the parallel lines could be rotated, making the distance constraint invalid.

To automatically generate a parallelism constraint could lead to problems if the lines are already constrained parallel in any other way, i.e. the sketch becomes over constrained.

Ideally there would be some intelligence that offers to automatically remove one of the conflicting constraints. But I think, the way that it works today would be sufficient - you get a warning and have to remove another constraint manually.

Let's not push it over the top and create completely new solver concepts. The issues with conflicting or redundant constraints are already there and are already dealt with.

I think @paddle has implemented this in "constrain contextual" amongst other things :)
