Fastener workbench - extend thread range?

Postby bambuko » Sun Feb 28, 2021 4:48 am

Excellent workbench, but it has two limitations as far as my needs

1)
The smallest metric thread is M1.6
I need fasteners smaller than that, for example:
https://ghw-modellbau.de/index.php?cPat ... anguage=de
or even smaller:
https://ghw-modellbau.de/index.php?cPath=4_5_7_103

2)
I need "threaded rod for tapping holes" and "threaded tube for cutting external threads" in a range of ME threads:
https://www.gewinde-normen.de/en/me-thread.html

How difficult would it be to add these ranges to the workbench?
I realise that this is "niche" requirement, that would not be of interest to vast majority of users, so I am not asking for the workbench to be extended.
I am asking whether it is possible to customise workbench for my needs?

it is indeed a niche which must concern eyewear, watchmaker and other micromechanics
I don't know how to add articles to an addon
but you can create your library in a corner of your PC

Have a look at the source code. Even without any Python knowlegde you will recognize the patterns and can extend it.

...watchmaker and other micromechanics...
niche, but legitimate need :ugeek:
plus, the second part of my question (ME threads)
is not about "micromechanics" - it's about model engineering.

sorry, not sure I follow what you are suggesting?
Can you elaborate, please.

You give me more credit than I deserve
Wouldn't know where to start...
and, even assuming that I could find and make sense of source code,
I do not understand?
Are you saying that I could modify the workbench?

Absolutely, and everyone would benefit. This is the very meaning of Free software (FOSS.)

M1.6 bolt/nut here:
https://grabcad.com/library/2atmpolinem ... ric-m1-6-1

M1.2:
https://grabcad.com/library/4ftmpppolin ... ric-m1-2-3

M1.0:
https://grabcad.com/library/tutorial-ge ... -head-bolt

What about creating the odd measures yourself and putting them on GrabCAD for everyone to use if demand is there?

Bance is right, give it a try: Depending on your operatiing system you have in your local FreeCAD folder the Mod folder with the addon workbenches; on Windows it is in %APPDATA%\Roaming\FreeCAD\Mod. In there you find the Fasteners. Search for things you know, e.g. "M1.6", "4017"...

GrabCAD is easy (if the demand is there...).
The issue for me is - how to make it work in FreeCAD, in a usable manner.
Ideally I would like to add these threads to Fastener workbench, rather than creating yet another "something", but something is better than nothing :P
