I use one of the two view alignment macros I found in Addon manager to align the camera, then add the view to TechDraw.

In draft make a custom view to the face you want
Open the plane menu
Select center view
Now the view is good for the normal Techdraw operation

FWIW these are two macros I referred to:

Align to face macro:

I was just completing the comment I made earlier, since I didn't include the names of the macros I referred to.

Does it matter if this thread has multiple ways to answer the question? 😎

I know this is solved but I wanted to add; If you go to settings and uncheck Preferences-Sketcher-Display "Restore camera position after editing". You can then click on any face of a model and click create a sketch, sketcher will rotate normal to that face and then you can then just exit sketcher. Because the option above is unchecked the screen will stay Normal to that face selected. You can then go to TechDraw and get Normal dimensions.

Thank You freedman for the Preferences-Sketcher-Display hint. My life just got a good bit easier.
