I have never liked the cube and have it permanently disabled in Preferences. It does nothing special for me.

However, I believe the overwhelming majority of users keep it in place.

ah, ok, it is not a must to work with freecad. Thanks for info.

And thank you so far guys. You probably have done what was possible.
Caring about a graphic card from 2010 is not your job. ;)

I like the cube as a visual reference for the camera angle. You can also click on it to change the view. It's certainly not necessary, but for me at least, it was only one of the symptoms. If had any transparency setting for any objects it would cause FreeCAD to become unresponsive. When I opened a model someone else had created if I immediately turned off transparency I could proceed without further issue.
