3d printed adapter...designed in FreeCAD of course :mrgreen:

For accurate and perpendicular insertion using a cheap soldering iron.

Good idea, thanks for sharing. Could be further improved by an adapter to the soldering iron assuring that the insert is properly aligned to the soldering iron. E.g. by a tangent constraint :lol: .

I made tips for the iron for each size insert so the inserts self align on the end on the soldering iron

No doubt, but as always, "it depends". For a simple one-time, low-force assembly a tapped hole would be fine. For repeated use or higher strength the insert rules.
