Adding surfaces to contours of a 3D DXF import

Post by HermannLiebtsie »

I'm a newbie here and an amateur environmentalist delving into coastline erosion. I've obtained a foreshore topographic DWG file from an expert. I've converted it to DXF and imported (7 MB). The contours are represented as nearly 8000 Shapes. My wish is to generate surfaces and solidity. The Upgrade function has contiguated the very obvious long linear contours into Wires, but hasn't dealt with ambiguous contouring. I can't find a way of generating surfaces, one reason being that, unlike mountains, beach contours are open-ended, hence the Wires do not close.

I've consulted earlier topics on contouring, but this is different, as it doesn't involve geodata or Lidar etc, and the DXF is already 3D. I tried two Macros anyway (Site_From_Contours, Creating_faces_from_a_DXF_file) but as expected neither worked.

I've extracted a small section of the beach into a smaller file, but it's far too large for the attachment limit here.
Thanks for any help!
Hermann

Welcome to the forum

DXF import in Freecad is always 2D. There are no tools for importing 3D DCF or DWG

I hope that the Trials workbench can do anything for you, because this is developed to handle geodata.
This workbench has to be loaded with the Addin tool

Thanks Willem. The import is 3D - see attached. Elevation gain on the beach is small (3 metres) but seems clear. The Trails addin wouldn't install, returning several error messages.

Thanks Thomas. Your clear videos give me hope. I don't have the original software that generated the DWG so can't re-export it as a 3D model in another format. After a little difficulty, I got the DWG import to FC to work, but all it does is try conversion to DXF.
