Speed challenge non-parametric model

Post by thomas-neemann »

i had started this model in draft/part and someone wrote: "I can definitely do it quicker in Part Design sketcher... I suppose each to his own"
here is an uncut video where it's finished under 2 min.

I am still drinking my coffee (half asleep ;) ) but after I had my breakfast I will have to time it and either prove me right or eat my hat

OK, I had my hat for breakfast
You win Thomas.

Having said so, I will continue using (and preferring) Part design, even if it means some time penalty ;)

there is a good solution for "everything" in freecad, e.g. tangents in the sketcher, the form bevels in partdesign.

it is often clear from the outset that there will never be any changes. it should only be finished quickly, then draft is very interesting. if it's supposed to be parametric, there's no way around sketcher

And now to the next challenge: The customer wants this in 5 different sizes.
A Sketcher Lecture with in-depth information is available in English, auf Deutsch, en français, en español.

there will be a number of variants from when a parametric model is worthwhile. in this model, I suspect about from the second variant

it took me 1:20 (second try from the ground up after figuring out PD thickness doesn't like this shape) using sketcher instead of draft, note that offset 2D is parametric too. Also with this feature it would be possible to have a similar workflow of entering dimensions while sketching (I didn't use this now): https://forum.freecadweb.org/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=65279
I have no screen recording software in this computer so I hope you can trust my timer:

I can make a video later if you're interested in the how to, no guarantee of repeating the same record :)

this is a very good result. The tool is very interesting, I hope it will be included in the master.

My take.

It really depends on your workflow. I could never do a similar time with Draft, because I simply don't use it to draw things...
