My engineer sent me a complex, multi-part model created in SolidWorks as a STEP file that has the whole tree in it.
While it is opening in FreeCAD I see all the individual objects appearing in the model view, but when it is done I only see the root item.
I do see all the objects rendered in the 3D view but I cannot expand the tree. Is this expected? How can I expand the tree to access individual objects in it?
(When I open it in Fusion360 I do see the tree, so I know it is there.)

Please check the Preferences for Import -> Step. Or try Part -> Explode compound.

Import Settings didn't seem to change anything, but explode did! Thanks!

Thanks TheMarkster for jumping in. These were the preferences I had in mind (wasn't at the computer, so couldn't check). I think disabling the first is important!

is it not time to change default to not do the compound merge for v0.20?
this question is quite common...
it is easy to imagine that just about everyone will scratch their head when importing what should be a set of solids and end up with a single one.
imho, better to flip the questions to forum so that it is the ones that want it to be merged that have to ask if there is a setting for that...

I'm not sure about this, which definitely means that you may be right
. We had this indeed several times recently.
