Creating Terminal Housings and Recepticles?

Post by D3dl3g »

Hello All,

Is there an easy way to crate a housing/recepticle based on an existing housing/recepticle.

I have a male housing modeled, and would like to model the female recepticle to match. I will need maybe a 0.2mm gap for ease of fitment as parts will be 3d printed.

as you will see, there is a "pair" of male housings, these are locked together and i am unable to seperate because of the way the connector is designed in real life.

i understand i can just pocket from a solid block, but i am unsure of how to oversize the cut to allow for the .2mm tollarence

if it is to be printed, a simple possibility could be to scale the mesh

In my opinion, draw only one element, you will get the second part at the end with a Mirror
to have a gap of 0.2mm around the first, redraw the part to be copied with 0.2mm wider using the first as an external reference geometry

You could use a spreadsheet where you can enter your clearance as a value. That will help you if your first choice does not produce a satisfactory part as you change one number and the whole female model will be updated.

If you set the clearance to be zero, it produces the male print itself. If you set the clearance greater than zero, it produces an oversize thing that can be used to pocket out the female blank. You would have to be careful to add the correct multiple of clearance to any particular dimension (e.g. a rectangle would need 2 x clearance on horizontal and vertical dimensions. Some dimensions would need zero clearance added). This method also works if some parts of the female go inside the male - you subtract the necessary clearance from their dimensions.
