Can I add a dimension to a sketch?

Post by alecjames »

Hi
I'm in the sketch work bench with a fully constrained sketch. I would like to add a dimension to a line or between two points but not as a constraint; I want to know the "resulting" distance caused by other constraints.

Currently I just add another constraint; in the pop-up I can see the dimension, then I delete the redundant constraint. Is there a way to show the dimension on the sketch without it being a constraint, that updates as I modify other constraints?
thanks
A

Sketcher_ToggleDrivingConstraint

btw, if you describe what you attempted to find the "wanted function" but did not succeed - maybe wording / terms could be changed to make it more easy to discover on one's own.

of course you can: you pass in dimension for information (in blue)

Perfect, thanks both.

I always struggle with terminology in searches. I tried a number of searches like "freecad sketch show resulting dimension" - this was never going to work :)

fully understandable that you do not find it on your own, the only tip to give is that it never hurts to scan through the workbench page on the wiki, at least there most commands are listed, and hopefully one will catch your attention for what you are looking for.

in this case I doubt it though...

imho the command name should really be SketchToggleReferenceConstraint.

the normal is a driving constraint, to me this is analogue to that in a wordprocessor the command name (or toolbar button) for making a "bold" font would be "normal". It simply is backwards...

btw, obviously the wiki is missing the ability to make a reference dimension during creation of a driving dim.
