[Solved] Changing FreeCAD shapes to line drawings

Post by Noob007 »

Esteemed FreeCAD Peeps,

Please see the below image for what I'm trying to do. Whether it's changing preferences, etc., I'd appreciate any ideas anyone has.

Thank you, Noob

Hi Noob,

The following ideas come to mind:

Option 1:
If you want to do it directly in the 3D view you could change the draw style to Wireframe and set the background to white.

Set draw style:
  • Shortcut V,3, or
  • View --> Draw style --> Wireframe, or
  • Right Click 3D View --> Draw style --> Wireframe
To change the background color go to Edit --> Preferences --> Display --> Colors and set the background color to simple color and white.

Option 2:
You could create a TechDraw WB Page and insert a view of your object:
  1. Create your cube and position it as desired in the 3D View
  2. Change to the TechDraw WB and click Insert Default Page
  3. Select your cube in the TreeView and click on Insert View
  4. Switch back to the page and you will see that the view has been added
Bonus (Hidden lines):
  • Go to Edit --> Preferences --> TechDraw and change Hidden Line Style to Dashed
  • Select the View in the TreeView or by selecting its frame in the drawing
  • In the PropertyView, under the Data tab change the property Hard Hidden to true in the HLR Parameters
  • You can hide the view frames by right clicking the page and selecting Toggle Frames

Hope that helps.

Kind regards,
Johannes

EDIT: Made changes to the text format and elaborated some instructions

Realthunders fork also has some more advanced drawing style that can look more similar to what you want

It worked! Phenomenal instruction, Johannes. Thank you very much!

I also really appreciate you introducing me to TechDraw. Do you know whether or not shading like in the picture I've attached is possible within TechDraw? (I didn't find anything searching)

I think his description as 'shading' is apt and is somewhat different to hatching. I think what he wants is something artistic, to show how the light hits an object. See https://www.dreamstime.com/stock-photog ... ge16954572 as an example of what I think he is asking for, which is a little different to the focus of TechDraw.

Happy to hear that. You are welcome ;)

To be honest I don't know if this is posible with FreeCAD, however you could export your drawing in SVG format and use a vector graphics editor (e.g. Inkscape) to add any additional cosmetic elements.

Hope that helps.

Kind regards,
Johannes
