STEP file import

Post by Kelau »

Hello Freecad gods,

I've not been able to figure out how to open a step file and see/save its individual components.
There is a youtube video by Rick Bolt on this topic where he opens a STEP file of a camera D ring Screw assembly using V 18 of Freecad. I've tried opening the same file (from Grabcad) and i'm using V19 and v20 and for me the screw object remains as one single entity in the combo view/model panel. When he opens it he can expand the assembly to its individual parts.

I couldnt find a v18 download available to try it with. If someone could shed some light on how to achieve this goal with v19 or 20 I would be very grateful.

I hope to be able to import the step file and then save the individual components as stl files.

Thanks in advance.

PS forum search was ineffective because all my search words (Import Step Files) were considered too common :/

Hi and welcome to the forum!

You can configure the import in Preferences>Import-Export>Step.

I'm not sure if loading from within Preferences will solve this, but if you try once in the session to import or export a step file, then the Step tab should be visible.
