Navigation improvement proposal

Post by axuwon »

Hello everyone!

As for now, the mouse wheel is used only for zoom in and zoom out, even along with pressing the CTRL or SHIFT keys. My proposal is to add the following elegant navigation improvements.

1) Moving the object up/down: CTRL+ "mouse scroll up"/"mouse scroll down"
2) Moving the object left/right: SHIFT+ "mouse scroll up"/"mouse scroll down"

In order to test you can try it in Inscape.

So waiting for your feedback.

you mean moving the view, not the object, right?
I'm all for it! It could be added to actually all nav styles...

It's Blender way, I like it too.
There is also "View navigation" mode in Blender: shift+F. Rhino uses ctrl+alt+mmb to do this. It's very useful for interiors.
Shift+ctrl+mmb in Blender is reserverd for "dolly view", but if 100% compatibility is not required this combo could be most logical for nav modes using shift as mmb modifier (blender/revit). For nav modes using alt it can be either shift+alt+mmb or ctrl+alt+mmb (same as in Rhino).

But arrow keys are way slower and somewhat less precise...

But then you can use panning in your nav style of choice (all of them have panning feature). That would be more precise than wheel (not sure about quickness).

IMO it's better to use the suggested combinations for something new, that isn't available otherwise. Reserving them as just another way to do that same thing is quite pointless, IMO.

As an example of things that can be bound to Ctrl+wheel/Shift+wheel:
* smooth change between orthographic and perspective (i.e., view angle adjustment)
* move the camera forward/backward (i.e. like A, W in fps games)
