My GUI theme

Post by pablogil »

FreeCAD is a cool software, it's very powerful, flexible and so on. I use it on almost a daily basis and at least twice a year I teach FreeCAD to students, other teachers or even companies that want to use it inside their workflows.

One "problem" I always face when convincing people about FreeCAD wonders is the GUI and how it looks. By default FreeCAD doesn't look the same in Linux, Windows or macOS so the very first experience when starting it up it not the same and usually feels "ugly". Actually, new users don't know that they can deeply change the feel and look of it but they complain about the "not professional look" of FreeCAD.

Of course, I always show them how to change the stylesheets, change default colors for background and so on, but they are right: it's not easy for newbies to go to several Preferences places and change colors, etc and tweak it with good design principles so that FreeCAD feels smooth and beautiful.

My intention with this thread is not to start discussing about it, after sharing my thoughts I just want to share with you my personoal "GUI theme", the one I use everyday and which I'm pretty happy with. Maybe it helps you or future users to improve the experience while using this great software ;)

(a big trick is to set the 3D view background color to the same of the UI background to create an effect of continuity. I know it's not Glass UI or the Alternative GUI but it feels nice to me)

I hope they somehow inspire you :D
Cheers

It's not only a stylesheet but a mix of a stylesheet (Dark blue) with an "intelligent" set of colors for the UI (they can be set inside FreeCAD Preferences, I have included 2 screenshots to help you mimic it)

BTW, if you need more in deep explanation I can do a little "tutorial"...

Looks nice.

P.S. There is still some room left for customization.
