Is there somewhere, please, a summary of features, settings, options etc, etc for this "new overlay mode" to help someone new to it?
or... is it a case of wading through 15 pages of this thread trying to filter useful and simply experimenting and hoping :geek: for the best?
I am using Link branch and Assembly3
you can also download ... and try it here
excellent Assembly3 tutorials here

Most of options are available through Preferences -> Display -> UI -> Dockable Overlay. Please check the tooltips for explaination, and let me know which ones you still find confusing. I'll explain here and modify the tooltips later to clarify.
Try Assembly3 with my custom build of FreeCAD at here.
And if you'd like to show your support, you can donate through patreon, liberapay, or paypal

I stumble right at the beginning with F4, F3 etc
It may be my stupidity (not unheard off  ) or possibly because I use Vertical UI?, but...

starting with selection, property and task view on the left and tree view that somehow I have managed to get into transparent mode,
I try for example F4 expecting something to be toggle on/off, instead I get increasingly confusing jumble of panels and windows every time I press F4
similarly with F3 - my screen soon gets in a mess...

I will have to set up another PC with separate FreeCAD install just for experimenting so that I don't mess up my "working" set up
(however imperfect ;) at least it is working).

Question: Is there a way to make the overlay aware of the the color behind it and have it dynamically adjust itself to compensate?

I can confirm that the behaviour I have experienced when trying F4 and F3 must be (probably is?) related to Vertical UI
On a clean/virgin installation of FreeCAD as below:

Code: Select all

OS: elementary OS 6.1 JAlnir (Pantheon/pantheon)
Word size of FreeCAD: 64-bit
Version: 2022.111.30764 (Git) AppImage
Build type: Release
Branch: LinkDaily
Hash: ef3092bcbca5475eff4eb7ff7933eb3e9bbbe4b9
Python version: 3.9.9
Qt version: 5.12.9
Coin version: 4.0.1
OCC version: 7.5.3
Locale: English/United States (en_US)
the behaviour was more like what I have expected ... although not totally without issues?
before:

after F4:

eventually after some mouse jiggling... ;)

pressing F4 again returns it back to original
(it didn't do it when I used it with Vertical UI)

I guess I will raise the issues I have when trying it with Vertical UI in the appropriate thread not here?

Promised update on "my problems with F4 and F3" when used with Vertical UI.
Petrikas has now confirmed, that:
Petrikas wrote: Tue Jan 18, 2022 2:58 pm I strongly suggest against using F4 / switching all panels at the same time. That shuffles around the interface a lot, enables some disabled panels as well. I would strongly recommend using the individual buttons on each of the docks
It's a shame that there seem to be some conflict between Vertical UI (which after all is meant for Link Stage 3 branch) and standard behaviour in Link branch.
Having a UI that requires special handling instead of default Link branch tools is not exactly most desirable...

Just because my quote was rather out of context, I'd like to stress that F4 and F3 are both working as intended on my end, VertUI stylesheets or default
That 'reshuffling' I mentioned is expected, because you're turning dock windows into overlays. I think there's some misunderstanding on your part.

Do you have the same panels enabled (right click on an empty toolbar space and see how many panels are available to hide/show) with your clean config and with vetical UI? Maybe it's just the difference on how many panels are enabled

It's quite possible.
The only thing I know so far that using F4 with Vertical UI results in a mess on my screen that I can only undo by re-importing saved parameter file.
Of course it is entirely possible that I am doing something wrong... :)
