missing icon for the Std Transform tool

Post by uwestoehr »

there is not yet an icon for the Std Transform tool: https://wiki.freecadweb.org/Std_Transform
When you right-click on an object in the model tree, it would be good when we provide there an icon in the context menu.

Show hidden items
Hide item

We already have an icon for Recompute: https://wiki.freecadweb.org/Std_Refresh. I see that it is just missing in the context menu. -> I'll fix this.
The same applies for Set colors: https://wiki.freecadweb.org/Part_FaceColors

Hiding the item cannot have an icon in the context menu because its space is used for the checkmark in the context menu. For the menu we already have an icon: https://wiki.freecadweb.org/Std_HideSelection. The same applies for Show Hidden Items.

So what is indeed missing:
- icons for the Expression Actions
- icons for the Link Actions->MakeLink Group
- icon for Mark to recompute
- icon for Mark to rename

Do we really need an icon for each and every command? Honestly, I don't see any benefit of doing this and IMO it's even counterproductive as it makes it more difficult to focus on the important commands.

The same is stated by MS's design guidelines: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/window ... /cmd-menus

I would second Werner. It is ok to repeat the icon in the menu if it is used in a toolbar. This helps e.g. recognizing the corresponding toolbar entry when a menu entry is known.
But there is no real benefit in adding icons solely for the menu; it just makes the distro even bigger.

But of course it is a matter of taste. I think they help of being faster since you realize withing milliseconds what an option is about and where it is. For example in icon in the context menu for recompute and mark recompute would help me to quickly find where in the context menu they are since the context menu looks different for different objects.
Also the menu entries like should have an icon.

So I propose to add at least icons for Std_TransformManip, Recompute and Mark to recompute.

This is only true if an icon is designed this way that you can quickly get its purpose.

Sure, and thus I like @bitacovir's work. For example his recent improvements for the B-Spline icons help in daily work.

Once you guys get a consensus I can provide icons.

Currently I am thinking on do some icon improvements. That is redesign too small icons, too similar icons, icons that do not work with dark themes.
