Default anti aliasing setting
Most people want anti aliasing, so why would it be turned out off by default? I propose, that anti aliasing by default is turned on.
Re: Default anti aliasing setting
I agree, antialiasing is more or less enabled by default in pretty much every graphical application I can think of, including low quality games.

Really most people? I have most of the time to do with assemblies, also have a 4K Monitor. Antialiasing here only ball and chain. Besides that, i remember, there are people out there, they have graphic card issues. When FreeCAD crashes on the startup only because of the antialiasing, they are never able to switch it off.

Re: Default anti aliasing setting
Just because FreeCAD currently can run on a tin-can with batteries doesn't mean it's a good idea in the first place. How many users actually have crashes because their hardware is so terrible that it can't support VBO or anti-aliasing? Even $200 cell phones can antialias. Even chromebooks can antialias, even raspberry pi's can antialias... etc.
Re: Default anti aliasing setting
It may be helpful to provide a failsafe user.cfg with anti aliasing off, use Software OpenGL, VBO off, ...
A Sketcher Lecture with in-depth information is available in English, auf Deutsch, en français, en español.
Re: Default anti aliasing setting
I agree with @chrisb.
What is the scope to make a config that will work on "most used hardware" if one user that has a "problematic" hardware could not run the program to change settings.
An alternative would be to have a flag that will start FC with "safe settings" to permit at least a recovery if you make mistakes.

Re: Default anti aliasing setting
Most people in the world can not effort afford more then a tin can. And keep in mind, that because FreeCAD is free, many people who needs a CAD and can not effort afford a powerful PC, one of the first try (or the first try) will be FreeCAD.
A good compromise.
Just saying that the tessellation have more visual impact that as antialiasing.
