It is hard to understand what you really want or need from your experiments.

You can Draft_Downgrade a Draft_Shape2DView twice to get the edges. With Draft_Upgrade selected edges can then be converted to wires which in turn can be converted to faces.

If a Draft_Shape2DView contains only straight edges you can of course just create a Draft_Wire on top of it to add a face.

Can someone explain how to do that? If I drag and drop the object not surprisingly moves. If I copy and paste I get a new object. If I create a Link the linked object is given a different name.
Can the objects to which Roy refers be Groups and/or Compounds?

Drag and drop, with the Ctrl key held down, should work here IMO, but actually doesn't.
You need to edit the Group property of the Layer or Group object:
  1. Click in the Group field.
  2. Press the "..." button.
  3. Add the desired object.
  4. Press the "OK" button.
Objects cannot be in more than one Group. They can still be in more than one Layer, but that should be avoided, future versions may not support this.
